Privacy always remained a vital concern on social media. It is very important to think that how safe we are on social media and whether our personal data are safe or not. It is said that data is the new currency in this new era and so ensuring the safety of data becomes even more essential. It has become one of the biggest challenge  for the social sites operator to provide security and privacy to its millions of users. It becomes even more challenging to manage the privacy and security of ever increasing users and managing their huge amount of personal data. With the sharp increase in social media users in last few years the amount of personal data is increasing rapidly.   Huge amount of personal data caught the attention of malicious people and hackers and they try to gain access to the personal information of users by  initiating cyber attacks on social media.

Cyber crime is one of the most reported crimes in India. It is increasing day by day and at a very alarming rate. Social media has become catalyst for cyber crime. On social media it is very easy for the perpetrator to fulfill his malicious intention and make people victim. Cybercriminals find it easy to commit crime through social media because they can easily conceal their identity by the way of the fake profiles and they get a lot of data of their target. Youths are the largest victim of the cyber crimes because they can easily trust fake friendship and they get easily manipulated. They also feels threatened by online threats and they fear in reporting it to police. Most common types of cyber crimes that are affecting Indian youths are online threats ,cyberbullying, stalking, hacking, online fraud ,fake friendship etc. Drug peddlers uses social media as a tool to target youths. They try to influence youths to buy drugs and  other bend products which is illegal. With the popularisation of the social media in India drug stories among youth has increased.

Since there are so many threats on social media the privacy and safety of youths become primary objective. Staying safe on social media is the need of the hour . Small efforts on the part of the youths could ensure their safety. Unless and until youth themselves take necessary steps to ensure their safety it is impossible to make them safe on such a open and vast  platform. The first step that all the youths should take on social media to ensure their safety is to keep their personal information as private and they should know what should be shared and what should be kept private. They should not trust people blindly and if something goes wrong they should be courageous enough to raise their voice. Above all youths must be aware of the basic laws of the land. They should at least have a sense to make a difference between the legal and illegal activities. Government should also develop efficiency in handling cyber cases.
