vs. union of India is one of the most controversial case and it is popularly
known as Bhopal gas leak tragedy.
Bhopal gas leak tragedy
was a massive industrial accident that took place during the night of 2 ,3 December 1984 at Bhopal in the pesticide plant
of union carbide India limited which was
a pesticide manufacturing plant established in 1969 in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh
as a subsidiary organ of the New York based company union carbide Corporation.

India limited was involved in making pesticides sevin and temik and Methyl Isocyanate which is a
extremely toxic gas was used in the production. 40 tons of the methyl Isocyanate
gas was stored in a tank for production
purpose and unfortunately on the night of 2,3 December 1984 water percolated into this tank
and caused highly endothermic reaction
and all 40 tons of methyl Isocyanate
gas leaked into the atmosphere through vents soon transforming the city
into a deadly gas chamber that engulfed humanity.
There is no accurate data
on the total number of deaths that are caused due to this mishap however
according to the official report at least 3787 people died and it is claimed to
be 16,000 deaths . More than 5 lakh people got affected by the methyl
Isocyanate gas.
